How to whiten teeth with baking soda: is it really worth it?
Recently I stumbled upon a teeth whitening hack at home on YouTube and I was hopeful that it might work. it was about how to whiten teeth with baking soda.
Whitening teeth with baking soda has been widely used as an alternative at home.
Let’s face it, many of us don’t have that much money for a teeth whitening procedure at the dentist but we still want to look and feel good when we smile.
I can’t be the only one that tries almost all the at home hacks or DIY I see on the internet and half of then never work.
Doing DIY hacks at home are always fun to do and they are cost friendly or don’t cost anything at all.
I was feeling a bit skeptical because this was not the first time I had tried a teeth whitening hack and it didn’t work at all.
To clear some of my doubts, I conducted a little research to know what actually happens and how our dentition become white and clear when it is bleached.
Over time teeth can go from white to not so bright due to a variety of reasons; coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are the biggest villains.
They contain chromogens, intensely pigmented molecules that can attach to your tooth enamel and cause surface stains.
Surface stain can be removed with whitening tooth paste that has mild silica abrasive or cleansers to gently scrub the enamel exterior of the tooth.
But under that hard enamel is a softer, more porous area called dentin that can stow tougher, deeper intrinsic stain. Dentin also gets darker as we age.
These deeper stains need peroxide bleaching agents to remove them.
Teeth whiteners consist of a chemical called carbamine peroxide, which gets into the dental tubials in the enamel to eat away the stains and discoloration.
Some people have sensitivity while they are going through this bleaching process and that is normal.

It is important to note that as you age, your enamel can become thinner due to wear and tear over time.
There more likelihood for a yellowish dentition because the enamel has become thinner.
Also note that this dentition can’t be bleached because the bleaching product doesn’t affect the enamel. That’s why you see old people often with yellowed teeth.
